decor porn: master bathroom renovation, city house

Who doesn’t love a little interior design porn? It’s definitely one of our guilty pleasures. We love love love a renovation, a great ‘before and after‘ and pretty much any excuse to ogle high end fixtures and finishes. Elle Decor, Architectural Digest, Houzz. We can’t stop. And while this obsession may leave us a little envious of that sexy boudoir down the street, it also fuels a crazy over confidence in our abilities insatiable passion for renovation. So when a home with an amazing view, a desirable address and the space we wanted came onto the market, we made an offer, sight unseen, based solely on the listing photos, including this (sad) one of the master bath. Swoon worthy, no?

The dreaded ‘Before’

A surprising number of people thought we were insane to tear out cream colored marble and this solid wood double vanity. I. Can’t. Even.

The minute the house was ours, we hired yours truly as the General Contractor and Interior Designer, because after all, I was the lowest bidder, totally understood the vision and completely trusted in my own ability to bitch at subcontractors. Hiring subcontractors (electricians, plumbers, tile installers and trades who actually DO the work) that are qualified, understand your vibe and you enjoy working with is the most important part of any construction project. In reality, the subcontractors we worked with were amazingly talented, professional and a pleasure to work with and it certainly shows in their craftsmanship. We adore the finished project.

We were feeling the curves of the fixtures against the sharp rectangular tiles, sinks and medicine cabinets.

We love the reclining angle of this soaking tub and the smokey beveled mirror tile.

We got a vibe and tried to stick with it. Consider matching finishes & forms, but use complementary colors, periods & styles.
